Let’s Go Learn began as an effort to bring an academic reading model to the digital age. With the World Wide Web reaching mass market in the late 1990s, Dr. Richard McCallum of UC Berkeley took his reading and literacy development program and partnered with technologist Richard Capone to create a web version of McCallum’s diagnostic assessments. Prior to this effort, McCallum’s program was a paper and pencil exercise, which had to be scored and interpreted manually. In 2000, McCallum and Capone began with an initial vision to determine why students struggled in reading and how to better inform teachers on how to support student learning.
“Shortly after its inception, Let’s Go Learn received a grant from the US Department of Education to compare its reading assessment product stand-alone assessment system with one-on-one assessments offered by highly-trained specialists in the CalReads program. This study provided statistical proof that Let’s Go Learn’s online assessments do indeed work as designed; automating the assessment process and producing expert-level reading profiles in a scalable manner that leads to effective data-driven instruction.”
Automatic, personalized learning
McCallum’s reading and literacy development model already had a stellar reputation by 2000, where it was used in a “nationally acclaimed and cutting edge” certificate program lauded by academics. One California superintendent noted that “research has shown that McCallum’s techniques in literacy tutoring have shown incredible results – in some cases children with poor reading skills were able to improve their reading ability by three grade levels with only 20 hours of instruction.”

Today, Let’s Go Learn continues it’s data-driven, research-based approach to discovering how all kids learn to read, and these techniques have been translated into mathematics as well. In tandem with Let’s Go Learn’s reading and math assessments are its LGL Edge products. These online instruction products support state and Common Core standards, integrating an adaptive diagnostic assessment, an assessment management system, and online learning lessons into a powerful online personalized learning system.
McCallum and Capone continue to steer Let’s Go Learn forward, with McCallum continuing to develop learning strategies while offering professional development, and Capone serving as the company’s CEO.
